This stunning bronze masterpiece brings to life Moses, a revered prophet in the Abrahamic faiths, as described in their sacred texts; yet, scholars widely agree that Moses was a legendary figure rather than an actual historical person. According to the Hebrew Bible, he was adopted by a kind-hearted Egyptian princess and later became the fearless leader of the Israelites and lawgiver, credited with receiving the Torah from Heaven or authoring it himself. Additionally known as Moshe Rabbenu in Hebrew, Moses is considered the most influential prophet in Judaism, while also holding significant importance in Christianity, Islam, the Bahá'í Faith, and several other Abrahamic religions. The renowned Maison Barbedienne was a pioneer of bronze sculpture in France during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, the foundry produced bronze reductions of antique masterpieces, but from 1843 onward, they began collaborating with living artists to create original works. They secured exclusive contracts with prominent French sculptors such as Antoine-Louis Barye, Amntonin Mercié, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Auguste Rodin, and Emmanuel Fremiet. This magnificent bronze reduction is a faithful interpretation of Michelangelo's awe-inspiring marble sculpture of Moses, originally crafted for Pope Julius II's tomb between 1513-15 (San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome).
