This is a 2nd century AD copy of a Greek original from the 4th century BC. Moschion, an Athenian tragic poet, left behind three titles and several fragments of his plays through Joannes Stobaeus's preservation efforts. He penned Telephus, as well as two historical plays: Themistocles, with only a three-line fragment remaining, and Men of Pherae (Pheraioi), which dramatized the demise of Jason, a ruthless tyrant who ruled over Pherae. Furthermore, 33 lines from an anonymous play have survived, detailing human progress throughout history. In this fragment, Moschion asserts that humans initially lived like beasts, devoid of dwellings or technology, with no law to govern them and widespread cannibalism prevalent in their midst. Over time, the introduction of agriculture, cooking, wine, houses, and cities gave rise to civilization, and people began burying their dead, thereby avoiding reminders of their earlier cannibalistic tendencies.
