Mortiser spacer for harbor freight drill press
thingiverse
This is a spacer I made to fit around the quill of a harbor freight drill press because I messed up the spacer that came with it. To get the benchtop model to work with a mortiser attachment, you have to mount the chisel holder a little higher on the quill. This will remove a slight amount of your already limited drilling depth, but its the only way to get the bit into the chuck, unless you want to sharpen about a half inch off the square chisel with a conical diamond stone. I designed relief point to allow you to put the spacer on without removing the arbor from the quill. I recommend printing 100% infill as continuous lines. I achieved this by printing 10 wall layers. The harbor freight quill is like 40mm OD and the mortise attachment that I am using is like 65mm ID. It should be a tight fit and should work for 4/4 and thinner material for through mortises, or for most standard mortises. You will have to remove the table from the drillpress and use some plywood or something for a base to get it to fit. Note: This is a really dumb way to do this, but I wanted to try it anyway. You should have a much larger and more powerful drillpress or a dedicated mortiser if you are going to do many mortises, especially in hardwood. I plan on making a cheater bar for the press that will probably break it quickly to get the needed leverage.
