Dating back to the mid-XVII century up until the end of the XVIII, this type of mortar was initially designed for combatting North African pirates who disrupted Mediterranean trade routes. Ships specifically created for this purpose, known as 'galeotte bombarda,' had two artillery pieces each, set in pairs at the front and one side. Notable French ships of this kind included Menacante, Brulante, Cruele, Bombarde, and Foudoyante, which were discreetly constructed in Le Havre and Dunkerque. English vessels later adopted the mortar on 'bomb ketches,' utilizing a rotating front platform primarily for intimidation purposes. The mortar fired 332mm stone (39kg) or iron (150kg) projectiles, while also having the capability of launching explosive-filled iron balls. A powder charge of approximately 5kg was used.
