The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is commonly abbreviated as FLDS, which is a prominent organization known for its unique religious beliefs and practices. Its origins can be traced back to the late 19th century when Mormon fundamentalists diverged from mainstream Mormonism due to differences in theology and ecclesiastical authority. This resulted in several groups emerging across North America, but the FLDS became particularly renowned. The church gained attention worldwide for its strict rules governing personal conduct, women's roles, and familial structures. One of the church's defining characteristics is the practice of polygamy or plural marriage, which was renounced by mainstream Mormonism in 1890, following Utah's statehood. Nonetheless, FLDS leaders such as Warren Jeffs and other predecessors claimed scriptural justification for the continued practice. In the 21st century, FLDS was led by Rulon T. Jeffs, succeeded by his son, Warren, who remains a significant figure within the organization. However, legal disputes surrounding child marriage, sexual abuse, and forced labor, have significantly damaged the group's reputation over the years. The group has been subject to extensive government intervention, raids on church-owned properties, and high-profile court cases in an effort to hold its leaders accountable for alleged wrongdoing. FLDS's activities are largely carried out from Utah but also maintain significant presences within the United States-Mexico border regions of Mexico and Canada, respectively, as well as parts of Ontario, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Oklahoma, and North Carolina, making it a far-reaching, though controversial religious institution.
