Inscription - 'Moqimu, son of Gediah, (son of) Ate'aqab the servant'\r\nThese ancient stone faces belong to Roman Syrians who lived between AD 50-270, discovered in tombs just outside the city of Palmyra. Their fashion sense is unmistakably Syrian yet they are captured in remarkably realistic Roman style.\r\nThree types of grand tombs were built for wealthy citizens: single-storey house tombs, towering tomb towers with multiple levels and underground rock-hewn tombs.\r\nInside each tomb, rows of compartments are set into the walls to hold the remains of the deceased. Each compartment is sealed with a plaque featuring a stone portrait of the deceased person accompanied by a concise inscription.
