Found on page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose The moose (North America) or elk (Eurasia), Alces alces, is the largest species of deer and belongs to the New World deer subfamily. Moose have broad, palmate antlers; other members of the deer family have antlers with a dendritic configuration. Moose are typically found in boreal forests and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests of the Northern Hemisphere in temperate to subarctic climates. Human activities such as hunting have caused a reduction in the moose's range over time, but they have been reintroduced to some areas. Currently, most moose live in Canada, Alaska, New England (with Maine having the most in the lower 48 states), Fennoscandia, Baltic states, and Russia. Moose eat both terrestrial and aquatic plants. The most common predators of moose are gray wolves, bears, and humans. Unlike other deer species, moose do not form herds; they are solitary animals except for calves who stay with their mother until she begins estrus (usually 18 months after the calf's birth), at which point the mother chases away young bulls. While generally slow-moving and sedentary, moose can become aggressive and move quickly if angered or startled. During mating season in autumn, males engage in energetic fights for a female.
