Italian sculptor Emilio Gariboldi crafted a bust in 1925 for a town square in Barinas City to honor Jose Antonio Paez. This celebrated hero of the Venezuelan Independence War, born in 1790 and passing away in 1873, was being remembered through Gariboldi's sculpture. The original work commissioned by the city authorities vanished before 1970; however, it was replaced with a bronze replica sometime after that date. In 2007, vandalism struck the sculpture when it was splattered with blue paint. Though this initial damage was later cleaned up, years went by until red dots were again applied to the artwork, as captured in photogrammetry images taken in April 2018. On March 17, 2019, another unfortunate event occurred - the sculpture vanished from its location at Bolivar St and Paez Av in Barinas City, Barinas State, Venezuela.
