The slopes of the Tenismó mountain are home to the Calixtlahuaca archaeological zone, a Nahuatl word composed of two parts: calli meaning house and ixtlahuatl meaning "flat" or "plain", which translates to "house on the plain". This site is an archaeological landmark from Mesoamerica's Postclassic period. According to researcher Ma. del Carmen Carbajal, a researcher at Mexico State INAH center, it was built and inhabited by the Matlazinca culture. The 3rd monument is a circular temple, likely the most important building in the site due to its size and architectural features. Note that the base of this structure was discovered by archaeologist García Payón with a sculpture of an individual wearing sandals and a beaked mask, similar to a bird's beak, dedicated to Quetzalcóatl worship in his Ehécatl incarnation as the wind god.
