The Monument to the Conquerors of Space was erected in Moscow in 1964 to honor the Soviet people's remarkable achievements in space exploration. Both sides of the monument base display vibrant haut- and bas-reliefs showcasing men and women from the space program: brilliant scientists, skilled engineers, dedicated workers, their occupations clearly indicated by distinctive professional accoutrements. Notable figures include a computer programmer grasping a punched tape, a brave cosmonaut wearing a state-of-the-art space suit, and Laika, the pioneering space dog who became the first animal to orbit Earth.
