This commission comes from one of many sculptors who catered to foreign clients, especially the British, in the 1820s. Mary Temple Bowdoin's enthusiasm for music and painting is brought to life in the bas-relief by the cithara and palette suspended on the stone. Traces of a sarj coloring remain on the model, a patina used to mimic the color of bronze applied directly onto the plater without a preliminary base.
