Jean Carlus, a French sculptor from 1852 to 1930, created Monument. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was born on September 7, 1707, and passed away on April 16, 1788. He was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste who greatly influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon wrote thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; more volumes were published based on his notes and research after his death over a period of twenty years. It's been said that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century." Buffon held the position of intendant (director) at the Jardin du Roi, now known as the Jardin des Plantes.
