Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, better known as Anna Akhmatova, was a truly remarkable Russian poet of the 20th century. She made history by becoming a Nobel Prize finalist in 1965, her powerful female voice resonating with Russian poetry like never before. Her work varied from short, lyrical poems to complex cycles, such as Requiem (1935-40), a masterpiece about Stalinist terror that still echoes today. A stunning monument to Anna was designed by sculptor Galina Dodonova and architect Vladimir Reppo in 2006 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of her passing. Strategically placed opposite Kresty Holding Prison, where both Akhmatova's partner, Nikolay Punin, a renowned art critic, and son, Lev Gumilev, were repeatedly imprisoned during the 1930s, this monument serves as a poignant reminder of Akhmatova's unwavering dedication. She spent an astonishing 300 hours among the crowd of wives and mothers outside the prison, anxiously waiting for news and attempting to smuggle vital supplies to their loved ones locked inside.
