HIGH quality 1 Million Faces. Monteriggioni is strategically situated atop a natural hillock in central Italy, its medieval walls a testament to the ingenuity of the Sienese engineers who built it between 1214 and 1219 as a front line against their arch-rivals, the Florentines. During the centuries-long conflicts between Siena and Florence, Monteriggioni proved itself an invaluable defensive fortification, withstanding repeated attacks from both the Florentine armies and the forces of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1554, however, the Sienese were able to place Giovannino Zeti in command of the town's garrison - a victory that was short-lived, as Zeti soon handed over the keys to the Medicean forces in an act of reconciliation with the Medicis.
