Saint Michael's Mount is a thriving island community in Normandy, France, boasting a location approximately one kilometer off the country's northwestern shoreline at the Couesnon River mouth near Avranches. The island spans 100 hectares, equivalent to 247 acres. For centuries, Saint Michael's Mount has been home to strategic fortifications that date back to ancient times. Since the 8th century AD, it has served as the seat of a monastery from which it derives its name. The commune's unique positioning on an island just 600 meters from land made it accessible to pilgrims visiting its abbey during low tide. However, when the tide turned, would-be invaders were either stranded, driven off, or drowned by the incoming waters. As one of France's most iconic landmarks, Saint Michael's Mount and its surrounding bay attract over three million visitors annually. In recognition of their cultural significance, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
