Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, appointed Dal Pozzo as Archbishop of Pisa in 1587, also making him a special adviser. Bernini received the commission to create the bust from Cassiano dal Pozzo, a renowned collector and antiquarian who was also a powerful patron, notably supporting Nicolas Poussin. The powerful portrait is exceptional for its time, suggesting Bernini relied heavily on painted likenesses and possibly even a death mask to capture Dal Pozzo's likeness accurately.
