A bhikkhu is a Buddhist monk who has taken vows of ordination. A female monastic, or nun, is called a bhikkhuni. The rules for all Buddhist monastics are outlined in the prātimokṣa or pātimokkha. Their way of life is designed to support their spiritual growth: they live simply and meditate to achieve nirvana. A person must be at least 20 years old to become a bhikkhu or bhikkhuni, but can become a śrāmaṇera or śrāmaṇērī before that age.
