Moniack Castle

On February 6, 2020, Anne Cockroft and John Wombell stumbled upon a long-lost panel while scouring through historical records provided by William Jolly's groundbreaking research in "Proc Soc Antiq Scot," volume 16, published between 1881-2. Specifically, Jolly's work on cup-marked stones near Inverness, coupled with his appendix on similar markings found in the Western Islands, shed new light on this mysterious panel. As it turns out, this panel bears an uncanny resemblance to drawing fig. 43. Upon further investigation, the panel was discovered face down beneath a lush lawn adjacent to the rockery at Moniack Castle. Interestingly, the panel had been intentionally shattered and bore two visible drill holes, suggesting that its destruction was no accident.
