Kids can learn a whole lot more about money and math when they get hands-on kinesthetic learning going on. With Money Montessori, students can try building monetary values using real or imitation coins. These math plates are super simple and straightforward so that students can use them in breakout groups independently without needing constant supervision from an educator. How I Made This These plates were designed to be similar in shape and size to real United States dollar bill currency. The examples I have are for $1 and $2, but these can be expanded to $5, $10, $20, etc. Smaller values can be put together with coins side-by-side in 2D. When larger numbers of coins are required, we use 3D modeling to make a structure that supports stacking coins in 3D. The $1 money plate was designed using SketchUp, and the $2 money plate was designed using TinkerCAD. No particular reason, just to tinker around with different software. Building Additional Plates To build additional plates of other monetary values, use the following coin dimensions for stacking vertically or placing side-by-side: Cent Diameter: 0.750 inches/19.05mm Cent Thickness: 1.52mm Nickel Diameter: 0.835 inches/21.21mm Nickel Thickness: 1.95mm Dime Diameter: 0.705 inches/24.26mm Dime Thickness: 1.75mm Quarter Dollar Diameter: 0.955 inches/24.26 mm Quarter Dollar Thickness: 1.75 mm Half Dollar Diameter: 1.205 inches/30.61mm Half Dollar Thickness: 2.15mm Presidential $1 Diameter: 1.043 inches/26.49mm Presidential $1 Thickness: 2.00mm Native American $1 Coin Diameter: 1.043 inches/26.49mm Native American $1 Coin Thickness: 2.00mm Project: Money Montessori Money Montessori is a super cool way for kids to learn about money and math. What We're Learning Money Montessori is all about developing math skills, especially with money. Skills Learned (Standards) CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. For example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have? Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.3 Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.4 Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends. Lesson/Activity Duration: Individual plates can be issued to students in a traditional classroom to match the mathematics curriculum. For Montessori exploration or "choice time," Money Plates can take anywhere from 1-30 minutes depending on the number of plates used. (Additional Money Plate .stl files are pending...) Handouts & Assets Money Plates (Montessori) are designed to work without the need for worksheets, but they work well complementing standard math curriculum.
