Tons of cans are discarded every day, but what if we transform this waste into an everyday item? The aluminum used in beverage cans is remarkably lightweight yet incredibly strong, boasting impressive thermal conductivity. Its geometry is also designed to withstand extreme pressures. So why not leverage these characteristics? I created a simple Moka pot consisting of two parts that fit seamlessly inside the can. All you need is a recycled can and several hours of 3D printing to enjoy a rich Italian espresso coffee. How does it work? The can is filled with a small amount of water, while the filter is filled with powdered coffee. When heated, the water inside the chamber is pressurized by steam. This increased pressure pushes boiling water through the coffee filter, producing authentic espresso complete with visible "crema". Will I consume plastics? No, you can use "Volcano PLA", a high-performance industrial PLA that offers superior heat resistance after post-processing annealing (a secondary process in which a plastic part is heated to enhance physical and thermal properties).
