The Human Genome Project was initiated in 1990 by the National Institutes of Health. It had three main goals: to map the entire human genome, determine the sequence of the human DNA, and identify all of the genes within the genome. The project made a major breakthrough with the completion of the first draft of the human genome in 2001.
