Modular VAWT Verticle axis wind turbine
thingiverse
This is an innovative VAWT that can be easily fabricated using smaller printers. Its modular design allows it to be stacked as high as necessary, providing the torque required for efficient energy production. As this project continues to evolve, modifications are likely to occur; however, at present, it functions flawlessly. The hub should be printed with double-thick walls and at least 50% infill density to ensure stability. Rods, fins, and bottom bearings should have 100% infill density for optimal performance. The top bearing, on the other hand, requires a minimum of 50% infill density. Each component is designed to seamlessly slot into its neighboring part, making assembly relatively foolproof. If necessary, adhesive can be applied for added security. Support structures may need to be printed for the fins, depending on the material used. The top and bottom bearings will require "seasoning" - running them continuously until they are well-lubricated, after which a small amount of oil should be added. Power extraction is most efficiently accomplished via the top bearing. Notably, this bearing proved to be the most challenging aspect of the design, requiring an electric motor to operate for half a day before it became loose enough to function smoothly. A video demonstrating its operation can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHLFTU9vK0I Print Settings: Rafts: Yes Supports: No Resolution: .1mm Notes: 100% infill for fins, rods, and bottom bearing; 25-100 layers for the hub. The rods should fit snugly with the fins and slightly snugly with the hub. Adhesive can be applied to these rods for external use. The top cap offers a choice between gears or pulleys, serving as the attachment point for the generator. The bottom bearing simply supports the weight of the VAWT, allowing it to spin freely. If you have a superior design for the bottom/top caps, please share your ideas!
