It's Here! The World's First Customizable, Modular, Mobile Tool Box is Here and It's Affordable. A basic furniture dolly priced at $12 is at its core. I decided on 2x4 framing due to its low cost and the fact that it offers a flat surface to attach tools with ease using drywall screws. This approach works for me and gives me a designated spot to store each tool. Tools tend to clutter my workspace, making them hard to find when they're needed most, so I'm fighting back by building something to organize them. A magnetic strip and some sturdy storage trays are also part of the system. A significant portion of the design has been repurposed from discarded items. The entire thing cost around $50 at Harbor Freight, excluding filament and tools. The tool array is held in place by a quad frame made of 7/8" dowels spaced 60mm apart (center to center.) Alternatively, 1/2" schedule 40 PVC can be used but doesn't fit as snugly. The tool blocks snap into place and can be screwed or riveted down. I've also added a luggage carrier that allows the whole thing to lean at a 25 degree angle for easy transport up a ramp. If you're skilled in SCAD, I'm interested in collaborating on a customizer for this concept, but I'm not proficient in it myself. Everything was modeled in 3dsmax using splines and booleans, so it should translate fairly well. ABS or nylon might be a better choice.
