So, I joined Makerbox and was searching for something to hold the samples. I checked out others' solutions to this issue, but all fell short for me due to one reason or another - spool hole too big or too narrow, too wide, not deep enough, etc. I'm quite particular about things like that. There are two main parts to this design: the primary filament-holding 'reel' and the 'end-cap'. You'll need at least one of each for it to work properly. I usually operate with two reels and one end-cap. The spool-part that holds the filament has a diameter of approximately 10cm. The inner part that sits in the spool holder (on my machine) is about 4 cm. There are four 'tabs' on the inner spool that fit into the four 'slots' in the endcap (or another reel). My spool holder comfortably holds three reels and one end-cap, which might be why most people's sample filament holders are about 5mm narrower. I should probably think about this some more.
