Inspired by Foehnsturm, I set out to create a custom modular printhead for the Ultimaker 2 from scratch. Starting with a version 1 design based on a mirrored base block of Foehnsturm, I aimed to achieve an almost symmetrical rod placement. This was crucial in maximizing build space, as any asymmetry would result in wasted space. Some key considerations; this head can be used with the standard UM2 firmware, but the margins are extremely tight. In fact, when starting a print, there is only 1mm of clearance between the block on the front of the printer. If you decide to create your own alternative mounts, such as a paste extruder or full metal head, you'll need to reduce the XY margins in firmware accordingly. For cable management, use two small tie wraps. This will keep everything organized and tidy. When it comes to mounting and un-mounting, remove the filament and bowden tube, then take out the two long screws at the left side of the printer. To remove the three original black plastic parts, you don't need to disconnect any cables from the printboard side. Simply clip or unclip the fans' connectors, which are located in a sleeve on each part. Before removing the XY rods, mark them first (they're not the same length) and check how far they need to stick out to touch the endswitch. It's essential to level your bed after installation to ensure accurate prints. If you create an alternative mount for this design, please share it with others, preferably including the step file. I printed mine using 0.1 layer height, 50% fill density, and a 1.2 shell thickness at 35 mm/s. The "Mount_v2i2e.stl" file has one built-in support that can be easily removed with a small plier, so there's no need for additional support in Cura.
