Nokia has unveiled the STL file for the Lumia 820's 3D case under a CC-BY-NC-SA license, demonstrating that more companies are recognizing the potential of crowd-sourced R&D and product communities. The file release allows customization with a 3D printer, enabling users to create their own removable shell designs. Excited by the possibilities, I have downloaded the file and plan to cut a rectangular hole in the back for modular pieces to be either booleaned in using 3D software or printed as separate parts. The challenge is on: design a bike mount, flashlight holder, or any other creation within a 12mm x 68mm space for the Lumia 820's shell!
