Modular Mounting System

Modular Mounting System

myminifactory

This project is a mounting system for lightweight objects such as phones and small cameras. MAJOR V5 UPDATE [27/07/19]: Visually slimmer arms with curved profile and more uniform strength are included. Printing orientation has been made more friendly, with more tolerance at tab connections. A rotating phone clamp allows quick switching between horizontal and vertical orientation. Added a lock to the phone clamp holder to prevent sliding. Stronger C-clamps have also been added. A flat stand is included for better aesthetics. An assembly diagram is provided for several applications. Updated links in useful parts. The system is designed to be modular, providing flexible use. It can mount most phones and small cameras onto a wide range of objects. Using the same parts printed for different purposes is the major approach. The included phone clamp grabs phones firmly and is suitable for phones from about 55mm wide to 85mm wide (iPhone 4 - iPhone XS Max and bigger). The clamp hook was angled so it won't accidentally press buttons on the side of the phone. The modules can be used with GoPro compatible equipment. Standard M5 bolts and nuts are included, but metal ones are recommended for the arm. With this modular system, new add-ons will be developed. Many objects designed for GoPro are already usable for this setup. STEP files for modular parts have been uploaded so everyone can collaborate on better solutions. Phone/Camera/GoPro mount for Ultimaker 2 monitoring is one of the achieved applications. Phone/Camera/GoPro mount for Aluminum extrusion printers is another. A desk clamp for phone/camera and a stand for phone are also included. A headphone stand is part of this project. Printing recommendations include printing with complete support interface for better mechanical performance. The orientation of STL files has already been thought through during testing, so try printing at the current orientation unless you run into problems. Reorienting the arms to save support material is not recommended, as it can result in broken tabs. Mirror the arm one after another to have knobs on the same side. To ensure strong bolts, they cannot be printed vertically. Therefore, the bolts are oriented horizontally with the bottom teeth trimmed off and a 30-degree step shape (usually 45 if printed vertical). Print bolts and nuts at low outer wall speed (15mm/s) to increase accuracy. If tolerances don't work out for you, try changing XY compensation settings in your slicer. It's not recommended to extend the arm too long, as general filament is not strong enough to take that much lateral load at this size and the arm would be very wobbly. The arms are optimized to stay still. If you wish to use this design as a selfie stick or similar purpose, please be careful with material strength and use at your own risk. The joints were inspired by GoPro design. The foldable arm was inspired by "GoPro counter balance folding stick" by UltiArjan. Bolts and nuts were created with the awesome customizer "NUT JOB | Nut, Bolt, Washer and Threaded Rod Factory" by mike_mattala. The desk clamp was inspired by "G-Clamp fully printable" by johann517.
