Modifications for Bind-Reducing X-ends with Makers Tool Works Leadscrews For MendelMax and 10mm Rods
thingiverse
This is what I used to put the Maker's Tool Works leadscrews and anti-binding X-ends on my Mendelmax. I liked the anti-binding X-end design because I'd been struggling with Z-binding for a while. My Z motion is now silky smooth! The current version of the bind-reducing X-ends doesn't properly fit the delrin nuts Makers Tool Works is selling, which have an external diameter of 16mm. The modified nut adapter allows them to be mounted on the X-ends, and the modified Z rod mount allows them to be used with upper motor mounts with a 10mm rod. I know the theoretical advantages and disadvantages of using upper vs. lower motor mounts, but I've had good luck with upper motor mounts in my MendelMax 2, so I thought I'd give it a try, and it works pretty well with the aluminum couplers. Instructions Parts I used these parts from Makers Tool Works: http://store.makerstoolworks.com/motion/z-axis-lead-screw-and-nut-single/ http://store.makerstoolworks.com/motion/helical-shaft-couplers-set-of-2/ http://store.makerstoolworks.com/10-mm-bushings-set-of-4/ http://store.makerstoolworks.com/8-mm-bushings-set-of-4/ http://store.makerstoolworks.com/motion/precision-linear-shafting-8-mm-x-445-mm-set-of-2/ http://store.makerstoolworks.com/motion/precision-linear-shafting-10-mm-x-405-mm-set-of-2/ Printing Print 2 of this upper Z motor mount and 4 copies of the clamp. From http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:21705 print X_End_Motor_for_MendelMax_Leadscrew.stl, X_End_Clamp_for_MendelMax_Leadscrew.stl, and X_End_Idler_for_MendelMax_Leadscrew.stl. Note that we're not using the MTW versions, which have a center hole of about 12mm and can't fit the new MTW delrin nut. Print 2 copies of my Nut_Adapter.stl and Z_Rod_Lower.stl. 4 x 8mm bushings go in the lower part of the idler, and 2 x 10mm bushings in each X-end. They're press-fit, but I also glued them in place. I've had good luck with Igus Pillow-block bushings on my X-carriage. Note that the nut trap borders very closely on the center hole in Nut_Adapter. This isn't a problem - the nut will still hold, even if the wall between the nut and the center hole breaks.
