AP Spanish 5 Final Project - Modernism In this final project, we will explore the world of modernist art and literature in Spain during the late 19th century. Modernismo was a cultural movement that emerged in Spain in the 1880s, characterized by a rejection of traditional forms and a focus on experimentation and innovation. The term "modernismo" was first used to describe a group of Spanish writers who sought to create a new kind of literature that was more expressive and personal than the traditional poetry and prose of the time. These writers, including Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Juan Valera, and Emilia Pardo Bazán, drew inspiration from European Romanticism and the emerging avant-garde movements in France. One of the key characteristics of modernist art and literature is its emphasis on subjectivity and individual experience. Modernist writers sought to create a more intimate and personal connection with their readers, often using techniques such as symbolism and stream-of-consciousness narration to convey complex emotions and ideas. In addition to its literary forms, modernismo also had a significant impact on Spanish visual arts. Artists such as Santiago Rusiñol and Ramón Casas created vibrant and expressive works that reflected the new spirit of modernity and experimentation in Spain. Through our exploration of modernist art and literature, we will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context in which this movement emerged. We will analyze key texts and artworks, examine the ways in which modernismo influenced later artistic movements, and consider the ongoing relevance of modernist ideas to contemporary art and culture.
