This sculpture depicting Domizia Longina, wife of the Emperor Domitian (end of 1st century-beginning of the 2nd century AD), is part of the dynastic cycle from Tindari. THE DYNASTIC CYCLE FROM TINDARIThe statues of the Imperial Age from Tindari belonged to a single group of sculptures from the so-called "Basilica" area. This building was in reality a monumental entrance to the arcaded square located on the SW edge of the town.This was the focus of the excavations carried out by Robert Fagan, revealing numerous fragmented sculptures that, after a number of vicissitudes, have been transferred to the Museum of Palermo.A number of works preserved in the Antiquarium of Tindari and in the Regional Museum of Messina are probably related to the same group of statues, as well as additional specimens acquired by the Museum of Palermo, which had already been admired by the French painter J. Houel in the 18" century.This is a series of statues dedicated to the members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, whose founder, the divus Augustus, is portrayed in colossal forms in the sample today stored in Tindan.A second statue of comparable size is that, shown here, of the Emperor Claudius.The images of the imperial family (gens Augusta) also include several effigies in toga (traditional Roman robe), as well as of children (perhaps imperial personages), statues of empresses (Augustae) and personifications, and heads-portrait of the various components of the dynasty.The statuary cycle was enriched over time by other works in marble which are concentrated in the first decades of the 2% century AD, and inscriptions of up to the 3'" century AD.
