In this video I will walk you through the process of making a modern mailbox that I designed. I have supplied all of the design files so that you can make one too!The wooden panel at the front can be substituted with any wood that you want to achieve the look you are going for. However, I would suggest not going any thinner than 1/2" or 12mm thick for the best results. In my case, I cut a 5/8" thick bamboo cutting board to the 9"x12" dimensions (see drawings for all dimensions). The laser engraving is optional if you do not want to invest in a machine or do not have one. Otherwise, I have provided the "POST" file to use. The metal frames will need to be professionally laser cut (unless you have some pretty serious equipment on hand). Both are made from 20GA sheet metal. The inner frame is regular mild steel so that the magnets stick to it and the outer frame is stainless steel for corrosion protection and that slick stainless look. Contact your local metal fabrication shop to get them to cut these items for you. You can send them the DXF files from my links. The 3D printed parts can be printed in PLA although I would suggest PETG if possible. Use a higher infill settings like 20 - 25% and min. 3 walls thick both horizontal and vertical. You'll notice I only included the right side STL in the files… just mirror the part in your slicer and you have the left side. The handle is a 300mm "BILLSBRO" handle from IKEA, although you can use whatever handle you want and get creative. Hardware:QTY: 2 6mm diameter shoulder bolt, 5mm shoulder length, M5 thread (can be substituted with regular M6 x 12mm SHCS or ¼" x ½" SHCS)QTY: 2 M5 nylon locking nuts (will need M6 if shoulder screw replaced with regular M6 SHCS, or ¼" nut if shoulder screw replaced with ¼" SHCS)QTY: 4 M4 x 12 SHCS (or #8 x ½" SHCS)QTY: 4 M4 nylon locking nut (or #8 nylon locking nut)QTY: 4 M4 x 10mm FHCS (or #8-32 x 3/8" FHCS)QTY: 2 6mm or ¼" wall anchorsIf you are looking for products or items I've used with in this video, see below.
