Model of the Final Version of the Design of the Monument

Otakar Svec's gift for imbuing his sculptures with monumental meaning earned him victory in the 1949 competition for Prague's Letna park Stalin monument, a project that merged sculpture and architecture. Jiri Stursa and Vlasta Stursova were the architects behind this massive structure. Here, Stalin is portrayed as both leader and thinker: a commanding figure standing serenely at the front of a line of allegorical figures representing workers, peasants, intellectuals, and soldiers arranged in a relief composition flanking the central protagonist. The realization was based on a three-meter high model scaled 1:5. Svec, who still managed to make some adjustments before its completion, took his own life before the monument's unveiling. His final work outlasted him by just seven years, as the official renunciation of Stalin's cult led to the removal of his statue. This object is part of "Scan The World".
