Model Canoe, Freedom Victorious
sketchfab
1875-1885 A truly massive model canoe of a Great Lakes type canoe stands out, its sides adorned with intricate porcupine quill work in vibrant purple, yellow, green, and white hues. The 'Manboards' at either end symbolize the spirit of the canoe, a distinctive characteristic of Great Lakes canoe models. At the center, a beautifully crafted floral design meets an eagle, both grasping the end of a scroll in its beak, upon which are inscribed the powerful words, "Freedom Victorious." This exceptional model canoe showcases the remarkable artistry of quill work. It's conceivable that it was created as a commemorative item for the U.S. Centennial celebration in 1876. Similar pieces can be found at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Historical Museum. The model canoe was gifted to Daniel C. Lamberton's family around 1880 by one of "Chief" Ignatius Petoskey's sons, as a gesture of appreciation for assistance rendered during an illness. W.F. Keeney acquired the canoe approximately 1920 when Helen M. Keeney, the last surviving member of Lamberton's family, passed away.
