Model 68A - Bathochordaeus stygius larvacean

sketchfab

This is an animation of a massive larvacean (Bathochordaeus stygius), found in Monterey Bay, California, USA (latitude 36.7015, longitude -122.0538) at a depth of 230 meters during a MBARI Midwater Ecology cruise in 2015. This reconstruction was completed by talented CG artist Robert Gutierrez in collaboration with Kakani Katija, Joost Daniels, Rob Sherlock, and others at the MBARI Bioinspiration lab (https://www.mbari.org/bioinspiration-lab/). This species was described in a study published in the journal Nature, which reveals a groundbreaking laser-based system for constructing 3D models of delicate marine animals and their mucus secretions. The 3DR model was created using MBARI's cutting-edge laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, deployed from the RV Rachel Carson mounted to the ROV MiniROV. To learn more about DPIV, visit https://www.mbari.org/deep-piv-3d-flow/. To explore the data products of this work, see https://www.bioinspirationlab.org.
