Model 57A - Flying Gecko

sketchfab

This animation is a high-definition rendering of a flying gecko (Ptychozoon kuhli) photo-realistically captured with the Beastcam MACRO from live footage shot in the Irschick lab at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where the gecko weighed exactly 13.8 grams. Renowned CGI artist Johnson Martin meticulously retopologized and reconstructed the gecko using images captured with Canon G16 cameras along with other images primarily processed with cutting-edge open-source tools such as Blender. We collaborated closely with Cameron Siler from the University of Oklahoma and Tony Gamble from Marquette University to create this model, which they will use to extensively test models of gliding in geckos. The creation of this intricate 3D model was successfully supported by a generous NSF grant number 1657662.
