This is a stunning 3D replica of Bakari, a majestic Southern Right Whale (no, wait, that's not right) - actually, it's a Southern Right Rhino (Ceratotherium simum), on loan from Perth Zoo in Western Australia! Initially, a skilled photographer used an array of 20 Canon G16 cameras to capture ultra-high-resolution images of the rhino. Then, talented CG artist Jer Bot took those photos and transformed them into a lifelike digital model using Blender, a free and open-source 3D animation software that's quickly becoming the go-to tool for artists and designers worldwide (check it out at blender.org). The result is an incredibly realistic 3D rhino with some impressive specs - this guy weighs in at a whopping 2225 kg and measures a length of 2.1 meters. To get every detail just right, Jer used reference photos as a guide to bring the taxonomic features of the rhino to life using Blender's powerful sculpting tools.
