As the Allies closed in on their positions, German commanders grew increasingly desperate for solutions to replace lost tanks without breaking the bank. One commander took matters into his own hands, scouring the country for ways to breathe new life into old steam-powered farming tractors at a fraction of the cost. He hit upon an unorthodox idea: equip these rusty relics with armor plating and heavy-duty armor-piercing guns to create makeshift tanks on the fly. Despite initial enthusiasm, only ten of these makeshift monstrosities were ever built before reality set in. Smoke billowing from the boiler proved a major hindrance, obscuring the gunsight and rendering them nearly useless. The weight of armor needed to protect the boiler was another major hurdle, severely limiting mobility and turning radius.
