MK5 / MK6 Thermal Barrier Heatsoak / Cooling Mod
thingiverse
Initially, this project failed as the PTFE expanded into the large holes under filament pressure, making it impossible to extract either the filament or the tube. However, the creator remains hopeful that with smaller holes, this modification could still work effectively. An alternative solution could be stacking TO-5 heatsinks on the tube. The modified MK5/MK6 thermal barrier was designed to reduce heat conduction and maintain structural integrity while preventing heat soak during long prints. To create the staggered holes, use a fine Sharpie to mark the tube and clamp it horizontally in a vise. Carefully cut the holes using an end mill or file, deburring the inside edges with a No. 11 Xacto blade afterward. Reassemble your hot end and experience minimal heat soak above the thermal core.
