The M1A1 grenade, commonly known as the "pineapple" due to its resemblance to a pineapple, was a standard-issue hand grenade used by the US military during World War II and beyond. Made of steel and weighing around 6 ounces, this grenade had a diameter of approximately 2.5 inches and a length of about 4 inches when it included the fuse and handle. The M1A1 grenade contained 7 ounces of TNT explosive, which was packed tightly into its cylindrical body. The M1A1 grenade was designed to be thrown by hand, with an effective range of around 30-40 yards. It used a time fuse, which had to be ignited manually before throwing the grenade. This meant that the user had to carefully time the throw in order to maximize its effectiveness on the battlefield. The M1A1 grenade saw extensive use during World War II, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Despite its limitations, it remained a reliable and effective tool for the US military until the mid-1960s, when it was eventually replaced by more modern grenades.
