The Mark 46 is the primary lightweight torpedo for the United States Navy's anti-submarine warfare, also being NATO's standard. The Mod 5 variants are in service until 2015, with upgrades like Mod 5A and Mod 5A(S) improving shallow-water performance from 1989. Designed for high-speed submarines, the torpedo is air-and-ship launched, made by Alliant Techsystems. It has a two-speed, external combustion power plant with Otto fuel II and weighs 231 kg. Its length is 2.59 meters in tube launch configuration, but extends to 4.5 meters with an ASROC rocket booster. The torpedo measures 324mm in diameter and can reach a range of 11 km, depths over 365 meters and speeds above 46 mph. It is guided by active or passive/active acoustic homing systems and has a high explosive PBXN-103 warhead weighing 44 kg. The Mark 46 was first deployed in 1967 (Mod 0) and 1979 (Mod 5).
