To aid in its planned conquest of Syracusan worlds, the Dominion needed to land its troops as quickly and efficiently as possible. The result was the Mark 15 Starspike, a one-of-a-kind aircraft that was never designed to touch down. Launched with disposable booster rockets on the perfect trajectory towards a planet, the ship would soar through the atmosphere, using its massive saucer-shaped nose as an airfoil and ablative panel to cruise at extremely high altitudes towards its destination. The four massive jet engines mounted on the craft's rear kept it speeding up. Flying partly on aerodynamic wings and partly by skipping off the surface tension of the upper atmosphere, this ship was a marvel of innovation. When over the landing zone, the saucer would detach from the rest of the body, plummeting to the planet's surface and allowing Dominion troops to disembark. The rest of the craft, freed from its load, would return to a low orbit, where it could be picked up and returned to its mothership. This system had a significant advantage over conventional reentry vehicles: much higher speeds, greater maneuverability, and a higher level of reusability.
