Krupp's pursuit of a production contract for what would eventually become the Panzer III began in 1935, pitting them against Daimler-Benz in a battle for dominance. Daimler-Benz ultimately emerged victorious with their design, leading to the creation of the Panzer III Ausf. A, but Krupp remained confident in their own abilities and saw an opportunity to create something new, resulting in the development of the Mittlerer Kampfwagen fuer Ausland, or MKA.
