During the Battle of Mariana, the IJN developed a concept called "Sentou Bakugekiki," or simply "Sen-Baku," which meant "fighter bomber." The Zeke "Sen-Baku" was remodeled at the naval aircraft factory in Kure. Later, nearly all types of aircraft were modified to carry bombs, but only Model 21 could carry a bomb on its first mission.
