The basic Mistral missile gets fired using a man-portable launch unit. Besides, launch units that let you fire the missile from armoured vehicles, ships or helicopters like the Aérospatiale Gazelle, Denel Rooivalk, or Eurocopter Tiger also exist. To turn away the flares spewed out by the rear of the targeted aircraft, proportional navigation with a gyro as reference is adopted for Mistral instead of the pursuit method in earlier IR-guided MANPADS. Also, to further improve the ECCM capability, the seeker of Mistral has an extremely narrow field of view to turn away decoys and interference; but the seeker can tilt over the range of +/- 38 degrees. The launcher puts the missile up for gyro use in just 2 seconds, while total reaction time is a swift 5 seconds. Developed by SAT, the all-aspect two-color (2-4 and 3-5 µm) cooled IR-seeker of Mistral takes on both laser proximity and impact fuzes. A close-in weapon system based on Mistral called Sadral fires off six missiles at once with a stabilized rapid-reload launcher that's completely automated. A fire control director is also part of the CSEE developed version integrated to the launcher, which consists of a TV camera and FLIR. The images created by both directors appear right there on the screen below deck in the operator console; before being launched, the missiles get locked onto the target. Weighing 1080 kg fully loaded, a Sadral launcher also includes an operator console that weighs 280 kg. A shipboard system called Simbad carries two missiles and has been updated with a newer four-missile version now referred to as Tetral. There's a proposed upgrade of the current Simbad too: it is going to be named Simbad RC; both the new Tetral and this upgraded Simbad can be remotely controlled right from the ship deck, while the older manual setup on Simbad used a straightforward optical sight to aim its targets.
