The choir stalls of the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo were commissioned by Bishop Don Juan Arias del Villar of the diocese. Work began on the project in 1491 and was completed the following year, 1492. The original set consisted of 80 chairs attributed to Alejo de Vahía as well as other unknown masters. In 1954, they were disassembled and left to gather dust in the attic of the Cathedral's cloister until being rediscovered by American historians Dorothy and Henry Kraus in 1979. Today, 28 stools from the original set are preserved. They are now on display once again in the cloister of the Cathedral of Oviedo, specifically in the Chapter Hall.
