Human: Mirror-coated sunglasses sport a reflective optical coating on their outside lenses that transforms them into tiny mirrors. Their tinted lenses typically imbue the wearer's vision with a warm brown or soft grey hue. By reducing the amount of light passing through by 10 to 60 percent, the mirror coating makes them especially useful for navigating sand-filled environments, waterscapes, snow-covered landscapes and higher elevations. Mirrored shades are one-way mirrors. The coloration of the mirror finish is completely independent of the lens's tint, which instead relies on its precise layer thickness and structural makeup to dictate the color. Law enforcement personnel in the US have helped spread their nickname: "cop shades." Two standout styles among this genre are those featuring dual lenses housed within sturdy metal frames (a look that sometimes gets mistaken for classic Aviators), and wraparound models. These sleek, continuous, semicircular lenses seamlessly envelop both eyes while covering an equivalent portion of the wearer's facial area typically shielded by protective goggles - paired with a slim plastic frame and single contoured nosepad. Wraparound shades are equally in vogue within the extreme sports world. At its core, a basic reflective coating is composed of just one deposited layer of thin metallic film - often achieved via ion beam deposition, sputter deposition or vapor deposition methods - however, such thin films tend to easily chip and degrade significantly more quickly, particularly when exposed to salty water. Contemporary reflective coatings are usually constructed with multiple precisely calibrated layers consisting of distinct dielectric materials interspersed between layers of various metallic thickness.
