Miron Cristea, born Elie Cristea on July 20, 1868, served as an Austro-Hungarian-born cleric and politician in Romania. As a bishop under Hungarian rule in Transylvania, he was elected Metropolitan-Primate of the Orthodox Church in Greater Romania in 1919. With the church's elevation to patriarchate status in 1925, Cristea became the first Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church after being enthroned. In 1938, Carol II took control and banned political parties, establishing a royal dictatorship where Miron Cristea was chosen as Prime Minister of Romania. He held this position from February 11, 1938, until his death on March 6, 1939. This object is part of the Scan The World initiative.
