Miron Cristea, a renowned cleric and politician, was born on July 20, 1868. His monastic name, Elie Cristea, reflected his devotion to the Orthodox Church. Born in Austro-Hungarian territory, Cristea went on to become a prominent figure in Romanian society. As bishop of Transylvania under Hungarian rule, Cristea's influence grew. In 1919, he was elected Metropolitan-Primate of the newly formed Greater Romania's Orthodox Church. When the church was elevated to patriarchal status, Cristea was enthroned as its first Patriarch in 1925. In 1938, Carol II imposed a royal dictatorship, banning political parties and appointing Miron Cristea as Prime Minister of Romania. Cristea served in this position from February 11, 1938, until his death on March 6, 1939.
