Mircea Stanescu Vasiliu in Arad, Romania

This is a bronze bust of Mircea Stanescu Vasiliu in Arad, Romania. The bust was placed amongst other statues of notable figures from Arad in 1938 by artist John Moga. A renowned figure, Mircea Stanescu Vasiliu was born on February 23rd, 1841, and served as a lawyer, publicist, writer, politician, and collector of folklore for most of his life. He graduated from secondary school in Arad in 1851 before moving on to study at a local Hungarian school. From 1859 he pursued law studies at two prestigious universities in Vienna and Pest. He also studied theology at The Orthodox Seminary in Arad. In 1866, he earned a diploma and became a lawyer, immediately opening his own law firm in the city. Between 1861 and 1879 Vasiliu wrote numerous satirical publications, including Tutti Frutti (1861), Ghosts (1862), The Humorist (1863), Village Gura (1867). He soon became a founder of the satirical press in Transylvania. In 1873 he authored a manual on Romanian Grammar. During his political career, he was elected twice as a member of the Hungarian institution, the Chişineu consitiency (1869 and 1872). Mircea Stanescu Vasiliu played a significant role in the history of the Romanian National Party. He passed away in Arad on December 30th, 1888. In 1938, politician Ioan Suciu repeatedly attempted to obtain municipal approval for placing a bust of Vasiliu to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. Despite Arad authorities voting against the decision, Suciu personally donated 5,000 Lei (around £800) to endorse the bust.
