The successor to the Archaic kouros, this magnificent torso stands as a testament to the tremendous strides made in capturing the male nude during the Early Classical period with unparalleled precision and realism. The razor-sharp anatomical detail unmistakably suggests that the full statue once proudly stood in contrapposto stance. Severely broken in ancient times, the piece was meticulously repaired in the second century BC before being repurposed to adorn a Roman theater at Miletus, where archaeologists later uncovered it.
